DACHSHUND


Dachshund come in two sizes: Miniature, weighing 11 pounds or less and standard, weighing 16 to 32 pounds. The Dachshund is a tough, hard-working hound and a gentle, loving companion.

There are 3 coat varieties for miniature as for standard: smooth hair, longhair and wirehair. Whichever the size, the Dachshund is a loyal, brave and very loving dog who has a lot of personality, not to mention he is very smart and completely determined. Because of their long body, they are very prone to serious back injuries.

They are loyal friends to children in the house. They are great family dogs as long as children are educated on how to handle them; they require gentle treatment as their long back is sensitive to stress and rough-housing could result in paralysis or permanent injury. Although Dachshunds are above and beyond loyal to "their" kids, they can be reserved and even snappy to strange kids, especially if they misinterpret playful behavior as a threat to "their" kid.

Dachshunds are diggers by nature and that, they will do! If you want a backyard with carpet-like green grass, a Dachshund is not the dog for you.

Smooth Coat Dachshund
    Regal, one-person type of dog
    Aloof, less tolerant that his longhaired and wiry brothers
    Most stubborn of the three types


Longhaired Dachshund
    Laid-back
    Need a lot of grooming
    Best hunter of the three types


Wirehaired Dachshund
    The coat is almost completely non-shedding
    Friendly and clownish
    Regular handstripping is needed to keep the correct wire coat
